JK 2009 : Northumbrian Hills
10th - 13th April 2009
Event Details
Overview
JK 2009 will take place in the North East of England, starting in Newcastle and then moving into the Northumbrian Hills.
Newcastle will provide a stunning backdrop to the sprint race, with its combination of historic architecture
including the Tyne Bridge and buildings around the city centre, right through to the modern sights at the riverside
including the Sage Theatre and Millenium Bridge.
Further north the Northumbrian scenery is breathtaking, rising from the unspoilt
coastline, featuring famous sights such as Lindisfarne (visible from the assembly area of Days 2 and 3) and the castles at
Bamburgh and Alnwick, to the Cheviot Hills in the west.

Day 1: Friday 10th April 2009 - Sprint - Newcastle
UK Cup race, FCC race
The opening day sprint races will use a combination of intricate
urban terrain around the Civic Centre, University grounds and the
fast parkland of both Exhibition and Brandling Parks. Much of the
area will use a new map specially produced to the latest sprint
specifications for this event.

|
Day 2: Saturday 11th April 2009 - Middle/Long - Kyloe Woods
World Ranking Event, UK Cup race, FCC race, VHI selection race
Kyloe has proved its pedigree as an area of national standing,
hosting previous major events including the British
Championships in 1991 and the Veteran Home International and
National Event in 2005. It has some intricate sections of detail to
test technique to the limit, especially as the elite competitors
race around a middle distance course. This combined with mixed
and undulating woodland will provide exciting route choice
challenges for the longer courses.

|
Day 3: Sunday 12th April 2009 - Long - Detchant, Shiellow, Greensheen Hill & Cockenheugh
World Ranking Event, UK Cup race, FCC race, VHI selection race
This overlapping area also includes open moorland with rock and
contour detail, runnable undulating woodland, and the exciting
sandstone rock pillars close to the ancient site of St. Cuthbert's
Cave. This will be a true test of your orienteering skills,
demanding changes in pace and technique throughout the course.

|
Day 4: Monday 13th April 2009 - Relays - Dipton
UK Relay League
The relays will take place in Dipton Woods - an area once used
for an early British Championship event. It consists of a forested
plateau area, with subtle and sometimes vague features, which
then gives way to a sloping woodland at the edges. There is a
good path network throughout and this area should provide a
close and exiting culmination to the weekend.

Trail-O
Day 1 will have a Temp-O event adjacent to the
main Sprint-O (subject to permission). Days 2
and 3 will have full Trail-O events in Kyloe. All
events will have open, paralympic, open-junior
and paralympic-junior courses. To qualify for
paralympic classes you need to be registered
with IOF and British Orienteering.
There is no need to pre-enter for the Trail-o but
competitors are requested to email
trailo@jk2009.org.uk
if they plan to attend, to help gauge map numbers.
Colour Coded courses
Days 2 and 3 will have White, Yellow, Orange and
Light Green colour coded courses. These are
open to all including non-British Orienteering
members. On-line pre-entry is available, but start
times will be allocated on the day. Entry on the
day is also available (same price).
String courses
Days 2 and 3 will have a free string course for
budding orienteers, with prizes for all.
Training event
There will be forest training on Day 1, distinct from
the sprint race in Newcastle. This is expected to be at
Chopwell Woods, GR NZ 137 584, west of Gateshead, although
this is still to be confirmed. Further details will be
posted in due course.
Embargoed Areas
- Day 1 - Sprint - Area around Newcastle University.
See map.
This includes public areas around Newcastle University.
The intent of an embargo is to prevent competitors gaining unfair advantage by
prior visits to the area and therefore competitors are asked to avoid non-essential visits,
and not to attempt to gain an unfair advantage by visiting the area before the event with a map.
Anyone who feels they are too familiar with
the area to be able to race fairly should declare themselves non competitive.
- Days 2 & 3 - Land enclosed by the A1 Belford to Fenwick, B6353, B6349 roads, and
the C road linking the latter two, passing through Holburn and Lyham.
See map.
The area is embargoed (i.e. out of bounds to prospective competitors) with immediate effect.
- Day 4 - Relay - The forested area SE of Hexham named Dipton Wood on the OS 1:50,000 map.
See map.
The area is embargoed (i.e. out of bounds to prospective competitors) with immediate effect.
Any competitors who feel they have reasonable grounds for breaking any embargoes,
or to check individual circumstances, should contact enquiries@jk2009.org.uk.

Dogs
We regret to have to announce that there must

This is prime sheep and lambing time, and, no
matter how well controlled you dog is, we cannot run
the risk of them disturbing nearby animals.
